Consider Travel Insurance Before You Leave

The purpose of travel insurance is to provide protection for travelers against the unique risks associated with travel, before trip departure and during the trip itself. Many of these risks, such as trip interruption, are not generally covered by any other insurance available to travelers.

Whether you are going to Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas or skiing in the Rockies, you should definitely consider travel insurance.

Travel agencies and travel companies will often help travelers by offering these insurance products. Most will offer travel insurance and non-insurance components bundled in a single, comprehensive package. Emergency Assistance Services are an example of a non-insurance component.

Although travelers probably don´t want to think about it, the plain fact is that travel involves some unique risks. In fact, travelers would be surprised by some of the things that could happen:
• Without travel insurance, you could miss your trip and lose your vacation investment.
• Without travel insurance, it could cost you extra money if you´re forced to return early

Travel plans are not complete until you protect yourself and protect your investment against these risks by purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance provides you with peace of mind, knowing that if a major weather event stalls or interrupts your travel to and/or from your ultimate destination, you won’t lose out. If you live in the NE United States (or anywhere that gets snow during the winter) you already know that a good snow storm means cancelled flights and that can stop even the best vacation plans… You should also be concerned about medical insurance because your medical coverage may be limited away from home, or you may not be covered at all.

Travel insurance means that if you can’t fly to Miami to catch a cruise vacation, you’re not going to lose out. Every type of coverage you might need is typically available, everything from Trip Cancellation insurance to trip interruption, even to unforeseen medical expense coverage.

Talk to your local travel professional when you are booking your trip, and ask about travel insurance. A few extra dollars is money well spent if that investment covers you in cases where weather and other life factors are out of your control. Make a smart decision and investigate your options on travel insurance, and pickup some extra peace of mind when you are far from home. Its a nice security blanket to know that no matter where you might be in the world, that regardless of common circumstances, you will be just fine.

Think about it. [Learn More About Travel Insurance Options]

Oceania Cruise Stops in Normandy France for Fine Wine and Foods

Our first leg of the new voyage begins with a trip to the taste the delectable wines and exquisite cuisine served in Normandy.

Chateau-de-Breuil
Oceania Cruise to Europe – Stop in Normandy

What a wonderful excursion we enjoyed during Marina’s recent call in Honfleur in the Normandy region of France. Normandy is known in the culinary world as the cuisine of “apples, cream and butter,” so what more fitting excursion to take in Honfleur than to a Calvados winery. We had a lovely bus ride across the Seine River to Deauville and then on to the Chateau du Breuil, where the specialty for many generations has been Calvados. When we arrived, we were greeted by one of the family members, who showed us where the apples were brought in the first phase of making Calvados – a shed where they are washed and then pressed into apple juice.

We then walked down a beautiful lane toward the distillery building, passing the small green Calvados apples along the way.

The distillery is a four-story brick building that was formerly a factory devoted to fabric making.  Once inside, we saw the equipment used for the double distillation of the apples, which was quite impressive in both size and modernization.

We then moved on to the barrel sheds, where our guide explained how the cider was then aged anywhere from two to 20-plus years.

He also pointed out that the roof of the barrel shed was actually the hull of a Viking ship, which was absolutely fascinating !

Normandy-Vineyard-Tour-Picture-2-Wine-Barrels
Normandy Vineyard Tour – Wine Tasting

We moved from the barrel shed to the tasting room, where we were treated to a two-year-old Calvados and a 12-year-old Calvados. The alcohol content of the younger Calvados was about 17 percent, and many guests thought this was a delightful aperitif.
The grounds were lovely, and we all had a fabulous time visiting this unique property and sampling their treasured Calvados.

Amazing Oyster Dish

Amazing Oyster Dish

Following our outing, I wandered back to the town of Honfleur for a late lunch. And what a lunch it was!  I started with a plate of 12 oysters, three with red wine vinegar and shallot, three with cream and Calvados, three with cornichons and tarragon cream sauce and three with onion confit and toasted bread crumbs.

Once the chef discovered that I was a chef – well then it was a full-court-press set to impress! Next came a local lobster specialty followed by the cheese plate and a rocket salad with a dreamy mustard vinaigrette. (Sometimes the simple things in life are the best!)

After that delicious lunch I needed a walk around the charming port town of Honfleur.
Even in August, this part of France enjoys mild temperatures. The shops had lots of local products and specialities, so I found myself picking up three local cheeses for our afternoon class so we could taste Calvados and a selection of Camembert, Pont d’Eveque and Livarot.
I am always delighted when I can share a taste of local wines and products with our Bon Appétit Culinary Center students. And this day in the heart of Normandy was no exception!

Spending US Dollars in Europe – Know Your Euros

What Do I Need To Know About Euros Before Traveling Abroad?

As an experienced world traveler, many people ask me for advice and lots of questions on Money. Specifically, I get questions on how best to convert US Dollars in to Euros, and I’ve heard too many horror stories about fees and other surcharges people discovered when they got home and saw their credit card statements.

To answer a few of these questions and (hopefully) save my fellow travelers from these headaches, I put together a few thoughts and bullet points with important notes about spending in Euros.

Cash

For certain travelers needing euros to pay for apartments (and acknowledging associated risks of loss or theft) cash may be converted at reasonable rates at several locations in Paris.

Exchanging dollars to euros will cost 2% to 3% which is about what big banks charge to use their credit cards. Here are a couple links for more info about exchanging currencies: www.fcochange.com or www.bureaudechange.fr

Travelers Checks

These are almost impossible to cash and may involve degraded exchange rates. Pre loaded ATM cards with a local currency are nothing other than updated Travelers Checks  and you should avoid them because of their  poor exchange rates and high per-transaction fees.

Electronic Funds Transfers (EFT)

For the occasion where it is required to pay euros for things like apartments, universities, and/or some other type of cash-like payments, there are groups which make transfers for you at little or no cost out of pocket.  Some of these may require you to establish an account with them (similar to setting up  a new bank account here in the US), then linking this new account to the local bank, and then finally using  their on-line interface [which should be secure].  This works in a very similar way that  Paypal does, with the exception that you can make a payment in most currencies. One can also make a payment via wire transfer (with some cost), EFT (at no cost), and drafts may be sent using the mail system (at no cost).

See these links for additional information:
www.currencyonline.com |www.hifx.com | www.xe.com

Note: There are a few additional steps involved such as establishing the payees address or bank information but for many types of transactions… this is fast and typically inexpensive.

ATM Machines In Europe and France

  • French banks do not add any fee of any kind to withdraw from their ATMs.
  • There will be a currency conversion fee of 1% charged by the network handling the transaction, typically Sirrus or Maestro or some other entity. It should be noted that Visa and MC own Sirrus and Maestro.
  • Your local bank might add additional fees as a percentage of the transaction and/or a fixed fee. Bank of America charges a conversion fee and $5 per transaction which is one of the highest foreign ATM user costs of any bank in the USA. They then throw their customers a bone by not charging the fixed fee on withdrawals from BNP but many, many credit unions and smaller banks only pass along the currency conversion fee with no fixed fee no matter from where withdrawals are made.

Credit Card  Transactions

  • Merchants or their banks do not charge the customer for credit card use.
  • Visa or MC charge a 1% currency conversion fee on all charges made outside of the USA (excluding its territories or military installations) regardless of the currency used in the transaction. Accepting a Dynamic Currency Conversion transaction does not avoid the conversion fee.
  • Banks may add an additional 2% if for no other reason than they can. TD Bank, Capital One, Navy FCU, or some credit unions actually absorb the 1% currency conversion fee. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citicorp and other large banks charge 3% (1% currency conversion + 2% in house) on foreign transactions. American Express charges 2.7%. It is a fundamental misstatement to conclude that Almost all US banks now add a 3% “conversion fee”. There are many banks and credit unions which do not add transaction fees and only pass along the currency conversion fee. USAA is a large bank which only passes along the 1% conversion fee but adds no additional costs to foreign transactions. Savvy consumers inquire about these fees before opening a bank account anywhere.

Ending Thoughts…

For your own good, PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING about what your bank will charge you to use and/or access your own funds. Before your trip, take a few minutes and stop in your local bank branch and ask questions! Ask them about…. ALL of the fees and how they are assessed. Get anything you can on paper, so that you can refer to it later when you are back home and reconciling your statements. Even though you might get the bank’s policies on transactions, they might still charge you differently.

It is a good thing to have notes taken BEFORE the trip that you can use when and if you need to dispute a fee (or FEES) later on.

Many of the large national banks are more concerned about their sales promotions than they are in providing low cost services to their individual clients. Smaller regional banks and credit unions typically save you a bundle and offer more personalized service in this process.

Awesome Hotel In Orlando, FL – CoCo Key Hotel and Water Resort

We just returned from a great visit to Orlando, FL and we just have to talk about the place we stayed at. The CoCo Key Hotel and Water Resort was awesome!

Now I can’t just say that without a little qualifying information, so here goes it! The location was ideal, right in the heart of the popular International Drive area of Orlando, so it’s close to everything.

The resort itself was very nice and clean,… something every family is looking for when they travel. The rooms were spacious, modern and fresh, with new flat-screen TV’s and modern appointments. Often we see things to pick at and report to the front office… but the CoCo Key was anything but typical. From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out, everything was really good.

We were impressed with the check-in process, the staff was really friendly and answered our questions, even offering their helpful insights on the resort and waterpark itself, AND how to get the most from our vacation!

When we got into the room, you can smell the clean air and the see how well everything was kept up. The kids just ran in and jumped on the bed, laughing and playing. The beds were very comfortable with new comforters and bedding.

Enough about the rooms though… Let’s talk about the Waterpark! One of the key features of the CoCo Key Hotel and Water Resort is.. (you guessed it) the Waterpark! This is a huge water theme park built into the resort itself. Not too big that you’d get lost, but not small either.  Actually… we thought it was sized perfectly! We got the kids checked in and we were able to sit back and watch them go crazy with the water features… all right in the comfort and style of the resort. We enjoyed the 14 waterslides fully!

Out by the pool area there are really nice cabanas to relax in, and the  poolside service was excellent. I almost wish I could find something to complain about, but I really can’t… Kudos to the CoCo Key staff for making our stay a great one.

There are connected restaurants (even a Pizza Hut Express for a quick pizza treat), and the resort itself was lush and tropical.

Again, we were impressed with the whole experience. I would recommend a visit here without any hesitation.

While we were there as a family, we understand that the resort also caters to large groups as well (Convention services and banquet meeting space for up to 250 people).

Some of the highlights from the Coco Key Hotel and Water Resort are….

· 54,000 sq. ft. Canopy-covered, outdoor water park
· 4 heated pools, 14 water slides
· Free scheduled shuttle to Universal Orlando and Sea World
· Free Wi-Fi !!!
· Free parking!
· Restaurant / food court / gift shop
· Fitness center
· Great location, centrally located on I-Drive
